How to maintain the exterior of your home:
1. Keep shrubbery and bushes trimmed away from the residence. This will prevent moisture and protect the wood from rotting prematurely.
2. Always check your sprinkler heads to make sure water is not being sprayed onto the home.
3. Do not ever leave bare wood exposed to the elements. If wood is not protected it will rot. This also includes sunshine and extreme heat as it can cause warping.
4. Every home should be pressure washed annually. This will prevent mold and mildew from growing, which causes the breakdown of paint coatings.
5. Caulking is a very important application that gets overlooked and most of the time, not even applied by most ‘fly by night’ painting contractors. New homes rarely have sufficient, if at all, caulking applied to them. While this is a time consuming process, it is not an expensive application when the house is being painted. This is included in our prep work, when we provide an exterior painting service. Properly caulking your home will prevent rot around wood trim and will extend the life of the wood. Wood repair can be very costly these days, because of rising economy costs and availability due to all the natural disasters we have experienced in the Southeast recently. By doing this process not only do you save yourself money, but you also contribute to the environmental preservation, that is so desperately needed in today’s world.
Stucco Homes:
1. Stucco can be painted. We use Sherwin Williams Lexon Masonry and Lexon XP Coatings for our Stucco Applications. We feel this company has the best products on the market today. These products will seal and protect the stucco, however, at the same time, not allow trapped moisture in as they are breathable products. See below regarding trapped moisture. Sherwin Williams has tested their products for quality assurance and they are proven to be an outstanding durable coating for Stucco. This is a 2-coat process, that will allow consistency and less flashes (which is where the paint absorbs in more areas than others). Applying 2 coats will eliminate those issues and it also gives more protection by having a thorough and even coating. Please contact Scott if you wish further information about Stucco and its application.
Q. The stucco on my home's exterior looks faded. What can I do to make it look new again?
A. Stucco, like many surfaces, can fade -- especially when it's exposed to direct sunlight and high moisture conditions. But, making it look new again is simple. Quality paint can revive the look of your stucco, giving your home a fresh, new appearance.
Q. What if I want to completely change the color of my stucco?
A. Not a problem. Just like any surface (for example, wood siding), stucco can be repainted to suit your color preferences. When selecting a new color, don't forget to coordinate with other exterior colors on your home such as shingles and trim.
Moisture and Stucco Problems
Synthetic Stucco has a high probability of trapping moisture. To eliminate this problem, it has to be cut 6-inches above ground level. Improper Caulking, will contribute to this problem. See the photo below for an example of what trapped moisture entails. This can be a very costly problem, as it can multiply into the interior of your home, causing rot and mildew, which will cause major interior damage. This also can attract unwanted pests into the wall surfaces, if left untreated. ![]()
